Non-Applicable Semester Petition

Non-Applicable Semester Petition

Students may request to declare a particular single semester, in which at least nine credits were attempted, non-applicable to their record.

To qualify, the student must have earned a minimum of 90 credits, at least 45 of which were earned at UMBC, and the quality of the work for the specified semester must be clearly out of line with the rest of the student’s record.

In order to be considered for a non-applicable semester, the GPA for the specified semester must have been less than 1.5. Additionally, the student must clearly have changed the focus of their academic program.

NOTE: The intent of the non-applicable semester policy is that the reason for the poor performance was based on the student being in an academic program (this may include a major, minor, or certificate program) deemed to be an inappropriate academic fit which resulted in one semester of poor performance, completely out of line with the rest of the academic record. For example, if a student came to UMBC as an Engineering major, enrolled in a semester worth of courses specific to the Engineering major and found themselves in a position in which the Engineering major was not an appropriate academic fit and quickly changed their academic focus to another major, such as Art. In this example, a non-applicable semester may be considered if the academic record shows one semester of poor performance (GPA less than a 1.5) in the semester in which all Engineering based courses were taken with significantly higher grades earned for the rest of the academic record as an Art major.
